Japan to Thailand in 2026: A 1.05 Million Target, a Weak Yen and What It Means for Your Files

Dispatch No. 432

27 September 2026 · David Leo · Explera Trade Desk · 7 min read

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is targeting 1.05 million Japanese arrivals for 2026, and by 22 September it had counted 742,605. The gap is being made harder by the things a Japanese client feels first: a weaker yen, higher fuel surcharges and dearer airfares. TAT took that message to Tourism Expo Japan in Tokyo from 24 to 27 September under its "Healing is the New Luxury" theme. This guide, from a Thailand DMC for travel agents, sets out what the numbers say, what TAT is doing about them, and how a Japan-market file should be built this season.

What the numbers say

Three figures, and they are worth keeping apart. Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 665,368 Japanese arrivals from January to August 2026, down 5.42 per cent on the same period of 2025. TAT's own count to 22 September was 742,605, against a full-year target of 1.05 million. And in the week of 13 to 19 September, Japanese arrivals jumped 55 per cent on the previous week as travellers left ahead of Silver Week, the run of Japanese public holidays from 19 to 23 September.

Read together, they describe a market that still travels when the calendar lets it, but is spending more carefully between holidays. The target is a target; reaching it needs a strong fourth quarter, and the year-to-date figure is below last year's. Quote it to a client or a colleague as an ambition, not a forecast.

Why Japan is harder this year

TAT names the pressures itself. Geopolitical tension in the Middle East has pushed up oil prices and airfares, the weaker yen makes every overseas trip dearer for a Japanese household, and carriers have raised fuel surcharges on Japan to Thailand routes; Thai Airways increased its surcharges on those routes for tickets issued from 1 July. TAT also reports that some Japanese travellers are responding by booking further ahead and trimming their budgets rather than cancelling.

That second behaviour is the useful one for an agency. A client who books earlier and watches the total wants a quotation that is complete on the first send: every transfer, every entrance, every guide hour inside one number, so nothing lands later as an extra.

What TAT is doing about it

At Tokyo Big Sight, the Thailand pavilion led on wellness, culture and hands-on craft: demonstrations of northern Thai therapeutic massage, herbal inhaler making and jewellery made from marine waste. Behind the stand, TAT says it is working with airlines and the travel trade to add seat capacity and charter services from Japanese regional airports, naming Sendai, and to run joint campaigns aimed at higher-value travellers and at secondary Thai destinations. TAT's own visitor profile for the market puts the average Japanese stay at 7.74 days.

None of that is a fare cut, and it would be wrong to sell it as one. What it does signal is where TAT expects Japanese demand to hold up: shorter-haul regional departures, wellness-led itineraries and destinations beyond Bangkok and Phuket.

How to build a Japan-market file this season

Plan around the holiday calendar. The Silver Week jump shows how sharply this market moves with Japanese public holidays. Hold rooms and guides against the year-end break and the spring holidays early, because that is when a careful client still travels.

Quote complete. A single all-inclusive figure with nothing added on arrival suits a client who is watching the exchange rate. Our FIT packages are built that way, and a Thailand DMC can hold the ground cost in baht while the client's airfare moves.

Lead with wellness and one secondary city. A wellness element and a quieter northern stop fit both the TAT pitch and a week-long stay. Chiang Mai and Lampang pair well; our wellness tourism desk can place a traditional massage or herbal treatment inside the itinerary rather than as an add-on.

Expect precision. Japanese groups tend to want timings that hold, guides who brief clearly and a named contact on the ground. Our guide services team can confirm Japanese-speaking guide availability for your dates before you commit.

Where the claim stops

TAT has said it is pursuing extra capacity from regional airports such as Sendai; it has not announced a route, a start date or a frequency. Do not sell a regional departure until an airline has filed it. And the 1.05 million figure is a target set by the body promoting the market, so treat any headline that it will be met as unproven until the full-year count is published. Our Thailand DMC services cover the ground side of any Japan-origin group. If your agency sells Thailand from Japan, the source-markets page shows how demand differs by origin, and the trade desk will quote a Japan-market brief with the ground cost fixed in one currency.

Frequently asked questions

How many Japanese visitors does Thailand expect in 2026?

TAT's target is 1.05 million. By 22 September it had counted 742,605, and the Ministry's January to August figure was 665,368, down 5.42 per cent on 2025. The target needs a strong final quarter to be reached, so treat it as an ambition rather than a forecast.

Why is the Japanese market softer this year?

TAT cites a weaker yen, higher fuel surcharges and dearer airfares linked to Middle East tension and oil prices. Some travellers are responding by booking earlier and spending less rather than cancelling outright, which rewards complete, early quotations.

Is there a new flight from Sendai to Thailand?

Not yet. TAT says it is working with airlines to add capacity and charters from Japanese regional airports, including Sendai, but no route, date or frequency has been announced. Do not sell it until an airline confirms it.

What should a Japan-market itinerary lead with?

Wellness, culture and one secondary destination alongside Bangkok, which is what TAT promoted at Tourism Expo Japan. Build it around Japanese holiday periods, quote it as one complete figure, and ask your Thailand DMC to confirm Japanese-speaking guides before you commit.

How long do Japanese visitors usually stay?

TAT's market profile puts the average stay at 7.74 days. That supports a Bangkok stay plus one regional stop, which is enough for a wellness element without rushing the programme.
