Southern Thailand & the islands — the Andaman and the Gulf
The Andaman and Gulf coasts: Phuket, Krabi, Samui and the island chains that anchor most beach programs.
The south is two coasts with opposite calendars. The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, Phi Phi, Lanta, Trang, Lipe) runs brilliant November to April and takes the monsoon in green season; the Gulf side (Samui, Phangan, Tao, Khanom) stays driest January to August — so a year-round Thailand beach program is simply a matter of routing by month.
This is where Explera’s in-house marine assets earn their keep: our own speedboats on the Andaman, contracted catamarans and ferries, and beach-club partnerships including Yona in Phuket. From dive certifications on Koh Tao to barefoot luxury on Koh Yao Noi, the south carries every client profile from backpacker groups to ultra-luxury villas.
Agent tip: Route by coast, not by habit: Andaman Nov–Apr, Gulf May–Aug. Never promise the Similans in green season — they close.

Southern Thailand & Islands — what your clients will experience.
Southern Thailand is the beach engine of the kingdom, and the key to selling it is the two-coast logic. The Andaman side — Phuket, Khao Lak, Phang Nga, Krabi, Phi Phi, Lanta, Trang and Lipe — peaks November to April. The Gulf side — Samui, Phangan, Koh Tao and the mainland coast — stays driest January to August. Between them, there is a dry Thai beach to sell in every month of the year.
Phuket is the volume anchor: an international airport with direct wide-body service, 100,000-plus hotel rooms from guesthouse to Aman, and our own speedboat fleet for Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi archipelago. Krabi counters with karst scenery and a quieter resort feel at Ao Nang and Railay; Khao Lak owns the family and German-market segment with long beaches and five-star all-villa resorts.
The Gulf trio splits neatly by client type: Samui for honeymooners and luxury FIT with its own airport and villa stock, Koh Phangan for wellness and the famous full-moon energy, Koh Tao for divers learning cheaply on calm reefs. Further south, Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat serve regional and pilgrimage traffic, while tiny Koh Lipe delivers Maldives-grade water at Thai prices for clients who will accept a longer transfer.
Routing is where a DMC earns its keep. Phuket-to-Krabi runs by road or direct boat; Krabi connects to Lanta and Lipe by ferry chains we hold allotments on; Phuket-to-Samui is a short flight or a road-and-ferry combination via Surat Thani for budget groups. Send us the nights and the budget, and the trade desk returns a fully-sequenced south-Thailand routing with every leg confirmed.
Best time to visit
Sell the Andaman from November to April, when seas are flat and every island route operates daily. From May to October, switch clients to the Gulf — Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao stay largely dry through the European summer holidays. The Gulf's own wet window is October-November. Green-season Andaman still works for resort-based stays at 30-40 percent off peak rates.
Getting there & around
Three airports carry the south: Phuket (HKT) and Krabi (KBV) with international service for the Andaman, Samui (USM) plus Surat Thani (URT) for the Gulf. Hat Yai (HDY) serves the deep south and Lipe routings. Explera operates its own vehicles and speedboats on the Andaman and holds ferry allotments on every major island chain, with one coordinator per routing.

Agent guideSouthern month by month — the agent calendar.
Seasonality decides whether a Southern program delights or disappoints, so here is the honest month-by-month picture our operations team works from. Because Southern faces the Andaman Sea, the operating calendar runs on the November-to-April dry window, with boat product confirmed day by day in the green season. Use it to set expectations at the point of sale — clients forgive weather they were warned about and never forgive weather they were promised away.
January in Southern
Peak season in full swing: Southern enjoys dry, sunny days around 30°C with flat, glassy seas, so every island route and dive trip operates daily. Crowds and rates are at their highest after the New Year rush. Hotel materialisation deadlines bite hardest in this window — the desk flags every cut-off date in writing. Booking note: family demand spikes — reserve connecting rooms early.
February in Southern
Arguably the finest all-round month in Southern — reliable sunshine, calm Andaman water and slightly thinner crowds than January. Visibility for snorkelling and diving is at its best. On the ground, drivers and guides are confirmed the evening before each program day, whatever the month. Booking note: confirm rooms 60–90 days out for this window.
March in Southern
Hot and dry in Southern, with temperatures pushing 33°C. Seas remain calm and boat trips run on full schedules; build pool or spa time into afternoons and start excursions early. Guide allocation tightens in busy weeks, so language requests should travel with the booking, not after it. Booking note: a strong month for series groups — allotments help.
April in Southern
The hottest month, softened by the Songkran water festival mid-month, when Southern erupts in good-natured water fights. Seas stay workable; afternoon heat calls for early starts. Hotel materialisation deadlines bite hardest in this window — the desk flags every cut-off date in writing. Booking note: rates are negotiable now; push for value adds.
May in Southern
The southwest monsoon arrives in Southern: short, heavy bursts of rain between sunny spells, west-coast swell building, and the first island routes switching to day-by-day confirmation. Rates fall sharply. Excursion capacity is managed day by day, with weather swaps decided before clients reach the lobby. Booking note: a strong month for series groups — allotments help.
June in Southern
Green season proper in Southern — lush, dramatic and excellent value. Mornings are often bright; storms tend to arrive late in the day. Resort-based programs and spa itineraries shine. Vehicle dispatch runs to the season: earlier pickups in the hot months, flexible buffers when showers are likely. Booking note: confirm rooms 60–90 days out for this window.
July in Southern
Mid-monsoon in Southern brings a steady rhythm of showers and surf. European school holidays still fill resorts at attractive rates; flexible day-by-day boat planning is essential. Vehicle dispatch runs to the season: earlier pickups in the hot months, flexible buffers when showers are likely. Booking note: family demand spikes — reserve connecting rooms early.
August in Southern
Similar to July in Southern: warm, green and showery with real value on five-star stays. Sheltered east-facing bays and mainland excursions carry the program when the west coast is rough. Guide allocation tightens in busy weeks, so language requests should travel with the booking, not after it. Booking note: keep one flex day in the program for weather swaps.
September in Southern
Statistically the wettest stretch in Southern, and the quietest. For budget-minded clients the rates are unbeatable; for everyone else we counsel patience or a Gulf-coast alternative. Our operations desk re-checks every transfer and excursion against the live conditions each morning this month. Booking note: flights fill before hotels do — sequence air first.
October in Southern
Transition month: early October in Southern is still monsoonal, but by late month the seas begin to settle and operators reopen island routes. A sweet spot for value hunters who book flexibly. On the ground, drivers and guides are confirmed the evening before each program day, whatever the month. Booking note: family demand spikes — reserve connecting rooms early.
November in Southern
The dry season returns to Southern: seas flatten, skies clear and the full excursion menu comes back online. Loy Krathong lights up the waterways late in the month. Book ahead — demand climbs fast. On the ground, drivers and guides are confirmed the evening before each program day, whatever the month. Booking note: family demand spikes — reserve connecting rooms early.
December in Southern
High season at full price in Southern. Expect superb weather, calm seas and heavy demand around Christmas and New Year, when minimum-stay rules and peak surcharges apply almost everywhere. Excursion capacity is managed day by day, with weather swaps decided before clients reach the lobby. Booking note: flights fill before hotels do — sequence air first.
Suggested Southern Thailand & Islands circuits for agents.
Multi-stop routings are where Southern Thailand & Islands earns repeat bookings — one region, several registers, no wasted repositioning. These two circuits are our proven sequences; both re-shape freely around your clients dates and budget.
The classic circuit
Phuket — Krabi — Koh Samui — Koh Phangan (7 nights). The region's headline act: the anchor destination plus its strongest neighbours, paced for first-time visitors. The program opens via HKT Phuket International (direct intl routes) and runs as one sequenced file: a single coordinator, luggage handled at every leg and contracted hotels throughout. Each stop contributes a different register — Phuket for phi Phi & James Bond Island by speedboat, Krabi for 4 Island tour by speedboat, Koh Samui for ang Thong National Marine Park, Koh Phangan for full Moon Party — so the week never repeats itself. Net-rate costing with two hotel tiers comes back from the trade desk within 24 hours.
The depth circuit
Koh Phangan — Koh Tao — Khao Lak — Phang Nga (8 nights). For repeat clients and special-interest files: the quieter stops where the region shows its real character. The program opens via Via Samui or Surat Thani + ferry and runs as one sequenced file: a single coordinator, luggage handled at every leg and contracted hotels throughout. Each stop contributes a different register — Koh Phangan for full Moon Party, Koh Tao for pADI open-water courses, Khao Lak for similan Islands, Phang Nga for james Bond Island — so the week never repeats itself. Net-rate costing with two hotel tiers comes back from the trade desk within 24 hours.
Southern Thailand & Islands — frequently asked by agents.
Should I book my clients on the Andaman or the Gulf coast?
Decide by travel date first: November to April favours the Andaman, May to September favours the Gulf. Then by client type — Phuket for nightlife and tour variety, Khao Lak for families, Krabi for scenery, Samui for honeymoons, Koh Tao for divers. If dates are flexible, the Andaman offers the larger excursion menu.
How do clients travel between Phuket and Koh Samui?
The premium option is the direct Bangkok Airways flight, around one hour airport to airport. Budget groups go by road to Surat Thani's Donsak pier and ferry across — roughly six to seven hours door to door, which we operate as a single escorted transfer with one coordinator and luggage handled throughout.
Is the green season on the Andaman still sellable?
Yes, with honest expectations. May to October brings short tropical downpours rather than washed-out weeks, rates drop sharply and resorts are quiet. Some longtail and speedboat routes pause in rough swell, so we anchor green-season programs on resort time, spas and mainland excursions, and confirm boat trips day by day.
Can Explera combine several islands in one itinerary?
That is our core south-Thailand product. Classic chains include Phuket-Phi Phi-Krabi, Krabi-Lanta-Lipe and Samui-Phangan-Tao, each leg on contracted ferries or our own boats with pier-side staff at every connection. Send your nights and budget and the trade desk returns a sequenced, fully-costed routing within 24 hours.
How many nights does a Southern Thailand & Islands program need?
Plan seven to ten across two or three islands for a satisfying program — enough to cover the headline experiences without the pace feeling punitive. Shorter visits work as add-ons to a Bangkok or beach stay; longer ones suit special-interest files. The trade desk will tell you honestly when a client's wish list needs another night, and when it does not.
What is the best gateway for Southern Thailand & Islands?
Route clients through Phuket (HKT) and Krabi (KBV) for the Andaman, Samui (USM) and Surat Thani (URT) for the Gulf. Explera meets every arrival with a GPS-tracked vehicle and an English-speaking driver, monitored against the live flight number, and the regional team sequences onward legs so the routing never backtracks. Send your clients' arrival city and the desk returns the optimal entry point with the quotation.
Can Explera run series departures in Southern Thailand & Islands?
Yes — series operations are core business here: we hold ferry allotments on every major island chain, so series groups keep guaranteed seats even in peak weeks. We build allotment proposals around your expected volumes with sensible release-back dates, assign consistent guides and vehicles across departures, and report load factors so you can steer marketing. One contracting conversation covers the whole season.
What hotel standard should agents expect in Southern Thailand & Islands?
Set expectations precisely: the deepest beach inventory in the kingdom — hostel to Aman — though peak-season space at the famous names goes first. We contract the strongest property in each band, state plainly what each delivers, and never let a brochure category paper over a real difference. Room-type guarantees, connecting rooms and event space are confirmed in writing at booking, not discovered at check-in.
