Malaysia, Thailand's Second-Largest Market: Selling to a Holiday-Driven Visitor

Dispatch No. 443

29 September 2026 · David Leo · Explera Trade Desk · 6 min read

Malaysia is Thailand's second-largest source market in 2026, with 2,831,654 arrivals between 1 January and 19 September, behind only China. It is also one of the most holiday-driven markets Thailand has: in the week of 13 to 19 September, Malaysian arrivals rose 29.12% on the week before, around the Malaysia Day holiday. This briefing from a Thailand DMC for travel agents sets out the latest figures and what they mean for how Malaysian trips are planned and sold.

The numbers

Thailand recorded 22,183,678 foreign arrivals between 1 January and 19 September 2026, down 3.67% on the same period of 2025, according to figures reported by The Nation. China led with 3,728,585 visitors and Malaysia followed with 2,831,654, ahead of India, Russia and South Korea.

The Malaysian total is lower than last year's. For January to August, Malaysian arrivals were 2,658,686, down 11.87% year on year. The reports we have seen do not give a single cause, so we do not offer one here. What the data does show clearly is how sharply the market responds to its own calendar.

A market that moves with its holidays

In the week of 13 to 19 September, 69,255 Malaysians arrived in Thailand, up 29.12% on the previous week, which the tourism ministry linked to the Malaysia Day holiday. The same report expected Malaysian arrivals to ease the following week, once the holiday had passed. That rise and fall inside a fortnight is typical of a market where many trips are short breaks built around a public holiday or a long weekend.

For an agent, the lesson is to plan backwards from the Malaysian calendar, not the Thai one. Hotels in the places Malaysians favour fill on those dates, and a group that books late for a holiday weekend will find less choice. Our source-market seasonality briefing shows how these peaks sit against the other markets.

On the road: many Malaysian visitors travel into southern Thailand by car or coach for a long weekend.

How Malaysian trips are usually built

Short, and often by road. Many Malaysian visitors cross the land border in the south, and Hat Yai and the wider Songkhla province are close enough for a two- or three-night trip. Our briefing on the Sadao border gateway covers the crossing itself. Others fly to Bangkok, Phuket or Krabi for a longer break.

Food and shopping lead the programme. Plan meals with care, since many Malaysian groups need halal food. Choose restaurants that can confirm it, rather than assuming.

Families and groups travel together. Multi-generation family trips and company or association groups are common. Coach transfers, connecting rooms and a flexible day programme matter more than a packed schedule. A Thailand DMC can hold the coach, the rooms and the meals on one booking.

What to do now

Look at the Malaysian public and school holidays in your booking window and hold rooms for those dates first. Offer beach add-ons in Krabi or Phuket to clients who fly in, and keep road-trip programmes short and simple for those who drive. For groups, confirm the meal plan in writing before you quote. Our page for Malaysian agents sets out how we work with the market, and you can send any brief to the trade desk for a quote from your Thailand DMC, drawing on the full range of Thailand DMC services.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Malaysia rank among Thailand's source markets?

Second. It recorded 2,831,654 arrivals between 1 January and 19 September 2026, behind China and ahead of India.

Are Malaysian arrivals growing?

Not over the year so far. January to August arrivals were down 11.87% year on year, although weekly numbers still jump around Malaysian holidays.

Why did arrivals rise in mid-September?

The tourism ministry linked the 29.12% weekly rise in the week of 13 to 19 September to the Malaysia Day holiday, and expected numbers to ease afterwards.

Where do Malaysian visitors go in Thailand?

The southern provinces near the border, including Hat Yai in Songkhla, are popular for short road trips. Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi suit clients who fly in.

Can you handle Malaysian groups that need halal meals?

Yes. We plan restaurants that can confirm halal food, and we set the meal plan out in writing with the quote.
