The dates, and the two festivals people conflate
The CAD Yi Peng Sky Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai is scheduled for 24 and 25 November 2026. Loy Krathong runs nationwide across the same period and is a different rite: Loy Krathong is the floating of decorated krathongs on water, celebrated the length of the country, while Yi Peng is the northern sky-lantern tradition centred on Chiang Mai. A client in Chiang Mai on those nights can do both — release a lantern at an authorised venue and float a krathong on the Ping River afterwards.

The rules that are genuinely enforced
This is not etiquette. Sky-lantern release is regulated for aviation safety, and the enforcement is real.
- Releases are prohibited in Chiang Mai city centre. The legal mass releases happen at authorised venues outside the city.
- Only authorised venues, in a permitted window. Provincial authorities set no-lantern and no-firework zones and define the hours in which release is allowed at all.
- Penalties are criminal, not administrative. Releasing lanterns or fireworks without permission has carried the prospect of imprisonment as well as a fine.
- The permitted window is announced annually. The specific hours and zones for a given year are published in the run-up, not months ahead.
Brief a client that buying a lantern does not confer a right to release it wherever they like. The zones exist because aircraft are landing a few kilometres away.
The part nobody warns agents about — the flights
Chiang Mai's airport adjusts its schedule every year for this festival. In recent editions that has meant well over a hundred flights cancelled or retimed, with operations ending in the early evening on release nights to keep the sky clear during the lantern window, and extra services added afterwards to recover the backlog.
The consequence for a file is concrete: a domestic leg booked into Chiang Mai on a release evening may not exist by the time the client travels, and the airline will move it without consulting you. Build the arrival for the day before, avoid late-evening arrivals into Chiang Mai across the festival, and check the schedule again in the weeks beforehand rather than trusting what was booked in August. The adjustments for 2026 had not been published at the time of writing — confirm with the carrier and the airport before finalising.
The venues, and how they differ
The mass-release events are ticketed, staged at authorised sites roughly half an hour or so outside Chiang Mai, and they vary considerably — different sites, different scales, different levels of ceremony and comfort. The well-known ones sell out, and they sell out early relative to the way Thailand usually books.
Then there is the free version: the city's own Loy Krathong celebrations, the Ping River, the temples and the parades, which cost nothing and are the older tradition. How a client actually reaches the venue
By pre-arranged transfer, and booked long before the week itself. The venues are outside the city, thousands of people arrive and leave within the same short window, and local transport on the night is not a plan. Agree a departure time that is earlier than feels necessary and a pick-up point that a driver can actually reach when the roads around the site are full.
The return is the harder half. Everybody leaves at once, in the dark, from a field. A named driver, a fixed meeting point and a realistic expectation of the wait is the difference between a magical night and a sour ending — which is what our transport team plans for on these dates.
How to make the night actually work
Go early and stay for the whole arc; the ceremony builds and the mass release is the end of it, not the start. Warn clients that November evenings in the north are genuinely cool by Thailand standards and a field after dark is cooler still. Tell them the release is a shared, quiet moment rather than a party, because clients who arrive expecting a rave are disappointed and clients who arrive expecting a rite are moved.
And set the photography expectation honestly: the images everyone has seen are long exposures taken by people who came for that. A phone will not reproduce them, and a client who spends the release filming will remember the screen rather than the sky.
