TAT Has Stopped Selling One Thailand to China. Here Is What It Sells Instead

Dispatch No. 356

27 August 2026 · David Leo · Explera Trade Desk · 7 min read

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has stopped treating China as one market. Its 2026 strategy now runs three separate campaigns out of its Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing offices — wellness in the east, sport in the west, families and culture in the north. If you sell Thailand into China, or compete with someone who does, that is a change in what your competitors will be pitching by season. This guide from a Thailand DMC for travel agents sets out what each regional campaign is actually pushing, which Thai destinations it points at, and how an agency outside China can use the same segmentation.

Update, 31 August 2026. A new Bangkok–Dunhuang charter shows the same secondary-city logic working in the opposite direction. The Association of Thai Travel Agents has partnered with Dunhuang to launch direct charters operated by Thai Vietjet, reported as commencing on 28 August at around four flights a week. Read the framing carefully before you act on it: this was announced as an OUTBOUND product — Thai travellers flying to Gansu — and not as an inbound programme, so it is not evidence of new Chinese demand for Thailand. What it does establish is lift. A charter flies in both directions, and ATTA’s stated reasoning for choosing Dunhuang — that it is a hub with high-speed rail connections to several major cities and a catchment in the tens of millions — is the same reasoning behind the micro-regional strategy below. The useful signal for an agent is which Chinese secondary cities are becoming reachable at all, because that is where inbound programmes can be built next. Treat the frequency as provisional: charter patterns are seasonal and are set by the operator, not published as a schedule.

What changed

TAT describes the approach as micro-regional: campaigns designed around consumer travel interests in eastern, western and northern China rather than a single national message, each run by the TAT office closest to it. The stated aim is to reach high-value travellers and to spread the resulting business into emerging Thai destinations instead of concentrating it on the same five.

Eastern China is being sold wellness and experience rather than sightseeing.

Eastern China, from the Shanghai office, targets premium travellers through wellness and experiential tourism. TAT has worked with LANN Space, a Chinese mindfulness and holistic wellness platform, and with the online travel agency Tuniu, to promote restorative travel in Saraburi and Khao Yai — inland, green, and a long way from the beach product this market is usually sold.

Western China, from the Chengdu office, is built on sport tourism and creator-led content. Working with Zx-tour, a Chinese sports travel company that packages international running trips, TAT staged an offline sharing session on Amazing Thailand marathons in Chengdu for fitness audiences across Sichuan and Chongqing, promoting running events in Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Buri Ram, Hua Hin and Songkhla.

Northern China, from the Beijing office, targets family travel for the summer holidays and demand in secondary provincial markets, alongside Thai cultural experiences. The Trusted Thailand safety framework sits behind all three, which tells you what TAT thinks the market's residual hesitation is about.

Why this matters even if you do not sell into China

China remains Thailand's largest international source market — a little over three million arrivals between the start of January and early August 2026, with TAT expecting the year to finish above five million. What that market is being shown shapes what gets built, staffed and priced on the ground.

  • Product follows the biggest buyer. If Chinese premium demand is being pointed at Saraburi and Khao Yai, guiding and accommodation capacity there will improve, and your clients benefit from it.
  • It marks the end of the one-China pitch. Any agency still treating the market as a single audience is now behind the destination's own marketing.
  • The segments travel. Wellness, sport, family and culture are the same four buckets your own market splits into. The Thai product being built for one works for the other.
  • Running events are an under-sold hook. A marathon in Sukhothai or Buri Ram is a fixed date, a reason to travel in a quiet month, and a client who brings companions.

Our Trusted Thailand guide covers the safety framework behind the campaigns, and our source-markets page sets out how we work with agencies market by market.

What to do with it

  • Segment your own Thailand offer the same way. Four themed itineraries beat one general one, and the ground product to support them already exists.
  • Look inland. Saraburi and Khao Yai are being positioned as premium restorative destinations. That is a genuinely different Thailand to offer a client who thinks they have seen it.
  • Build around a race date. Event-anchored travel converts, and the running calendar is published far enough ahead to package properly.
  • Expect competition on the wellness angle. If it is being pushed hard into China's wealthiest region, the good properties will tighten first.
  • Do not read arrivals as intent. Volume from a market says nothing about what a given client wants. Segment by interest, not by passport.

What the ground partner carries here

Which properties in the inland provinces are genuinely ready for a premium international client, which guides can carry a wellness or sport brief credibly, how a race-weekend file actually works once transfers and start times are counted, and what the second-tier destinations can and cannot absorb at volume. That is ordinary Thailand DMC services for travel agents, alongside transport on our own fleet and licensed guides.

Destination marketing tells you where capacity is about to be built. A Thailand DMC that reads it early gets your clients into those places before the price and the crowd catch up. Send dates to b2b@explera.co.th or use the trade desk.

Frequently asked questions

What is TAT's micro-regional strategy?

A 2026 approach that splits China into eastern, western and northern campaigns run by the TAT offices in Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing, each designed around that region's travel interests rather than a single national message, and aimed at high-value travellers and emerging Thai destinations.

What is each region being sold?

Eastern China gets wellness and experiential travel, with restorative itineraries in Saraburi and Khao Yai; western China gets sport tourism and creator content, including marathons in Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Buri Ram, Hua Hin and Songkhla; northern China gets family summer travel and Thai culture.

How big is the Chinese market to Thailand now?

It is still the largest international source market, with a little over three million arrivals between the start of January and early August 2026, and TAT expecting the full year to finish above five million.

Why should an agency outside China care?

Because product follows the biggest buyer. Where Chinese premium demand is directed, guiding, accommodation and transport capacity improve — and the four themes being used are the same ones most source markets split into.

What is the most actionable part for a small agency?

The running events. A published race date in a secondary province is a fixed reason to travel in a quiet month, it brings companions with the entrant, and it is easy to package once the transfers and start times are handled properly.

Does this change anything about safety messaging?

It confirms what TAT thinks the hesitation is. The Trusted Thailand framework sits behind all three regional campaigns, so expect safety assurance to keep appearing alongside the product rather than separately from it.
