What Ok Wa is
"Ok Wa" is the Shan, or Tai Yai, name for the end of the monastic rains retreat, the day most Thais call Ok Phansa, which falls on 26 October this year. The Shan communities of Mae Hong Son mark it with merit-making at the temples, processions and their own dances, and in Mae Sariang it has become a three-day town festival.
The 2026 programme has not been published in detail. TAT's listing for last year's edition, held from 6 to 8 October 2025, gives a fair idea of the shape: an opening ceremony at the temple with live music, a light and sound show called "The Magic of Mae Sariang", a concert, and on the last day a candle procession and the Miss Ok-Wa contest. Expect a similar format, and confirm the day-by-day schedule before you commit a client to a particular evening.
Which clients it suits
Ok Wa is a local festival in a small town, not an event staged for visitors. It suits clients who already want the far north-west: travellers on a slow Mae Hong Son loop, photographers, and repeat visitors who have seen Chiang Mai and want the Shan borderlands. It does not suit a client with a week in Thailand and a list of highlights.

Getting there, and the road this year
Mae Sariang is reached by road, most often from Chiang Mai on Highway 108, a long mountain drive through Hot. Clients flying into Mae Hong Son town can also come south by road. Allow a full travel day either way, and use a driver who knows the route.
This year the road needs checking. On 29 September the governor of Mae Hong Son warned residents of five districts, including Mae Sariang, to prepare for flooding from heavy rain, and landslides had closed roads elsewhere in the province. Reconfirm road conditions in the week before travel, and keep a spare day in the programme in case a section is closed.

How to sell it
Sell Ok Wa as part of a northern loop in the last week of October, with the festival as the reason to stop two nights in Mae Sariang instead of one.
