What San Don Ta is
San Don Ta, also written Saen Don Ta, is the ancestor ceremony of the Khmer- and Kui-speaking communities of lower northeast Thailand, in Surin, Si Sa Ket and Buri Ram. It falls in the tenth lunar month. Families prepare trays of food and offerings, call the names of relatives who have died and invite them to eat, and then gather to share the meal. It is often described as a reunion of the living and the dead.

Clients already heading to lower Isan. Surin is known for the elephant-keeping village of Ban Ta Klang, the Khmer sanctuary at Sikhoraphum and its hand-woven silk. A date on 7 October gives an existing Isan programme a reason to be in Surin on that day.
Where it fits less well. It is a single day in a provincial town. It is not a reason for a first-time visitor on a short trip to fly north-east, and Surin's better-known elephant festival is a separate event, usually in November.
Getting there and staying
Surin is reached by rail from Bangkok or by road, and clients who fly usually land at Buri Ram, about an hour away by road. Check current flight schedules before you build the day around a morning arrival.
