Songkran 2027 falls on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — and that single fact changes how the week sells, how flights fill and how much leave a client has to spend to be there. The official public holiday is 13–15 April 2027, and the two ordinary working days that sit either side of it are where the whole commercial shape of the window is decided. This guide from a Thailand DMC for travel agents sets out how the 2027 calendar actually falls, what is confirmed and what is not, and what to do with that when you are quoting eight or ten months out.

How the 2027 dates actually fall
The three official days run Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 April 2027. Immediately before them, Monday 12 April is a normal working day; immediately after, Friday 16 April is a normal working day. The weekends on either side are Saturday 10 and Sunday 11, then Saturday 17 and Sunday 18.
That is an unusually awkward shape, and an unusually valuable one. The holiday does not touch a weekend at either end, so it sits marooned in the middle of the week with one working day on each side of it. Nobody in Thailand — resident or visitor — treats that as a three-day break. They treat it as a nine-day break with two days to be solved.
The bridge-day question, and what is not yet confirmed
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Sat 10 – Sun 11 April | Weekend | Fixed |
| Mon 12 April | Monday | Working day unless designated |
| Tue 13 – Thu 15 April | Tuesday to Thursday | Official Songkran public holiday |
| Fri 16 April | Friday | Working day unless designated |
| Sat 17 – Sun 18 April | Weekend | Fixed |
Thailand's Cabinet routinely designates additional bridge or special holidays to join an awkward block to the nearest weekend, and it does so much closer to the year than most agents would like. So the honest position in 2026 is this: the three official days are known, and whether Monday 12 or Friday 16 becomes a public holiday is not yet known. Quote as though they will not be, and treat any designation as upside rather than as a plan.
Say that plainly to a client who asks. An agent who explains that the core dates are certain and the bridge days are a Cabinet decision still pending sounds like someone who understands the market. An agent who guesses and is wrong spends the following spring apologising.
Why the festival outruns the holiday
Because Songkran is not a public holiday that happens to have water in it. It is a new-year observance with a religious core, a family core and a street core, and each of those runs on its own clock. Temple merit-making and the gentle pouring of water over Buddha images and the hands of elders tend to cluster on the first days. The street celebration builds and does not stop politely at midnight on the third.
Regional practice varies as well. Chiang Mai's festival is famously the longest and most sustained in the country, and the northern celebration is the reason so much international demand routes there rather than to Bangkok. Elsewhere, the character and the length differ — which is a point in favour of choosing the base before choosing the dates, not the other way around. Our Songkran selling guide covers that city-by-city choice in detail.
What the calendar does to flights and inbound demand
Two things, and they pull in opposite directions on different days. Long-haul inbound demand concentrates on the weekend arrivals either side of the block — Friday 9 to Sunday 11 for arrivals, Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 for departures — because that is what a nine-day trip looks like from Europe or the Gulf. Domestic and regional demand concentrates on the eves: the evening of Monday 12 and the morning of Tuesday 13, as the country moves.
The practical consequence for an agent is that the domestic Bangkok–Chiang Mai leg tightens earlier and harder than the international sector does. Clients who leave the internal flight until they have confirmed the long-haul will often find the internal one is the problem, not the other way round. Book the internal leg with — or before — the long-haul, and if a client is undecided, hold the northern leg first.
One quirk of the 2027 calendar is worth knowing before you plan outreach: Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, a fortnight before the festival. In 2026 it fell on 5 April, close enough that European and Latin American school holidays brushed against Songkran and a family could take both in one trip. In 2027 they cannot — the two windows are cleanly separated. A 2027 Songkran client is therefore travelling for Songkran, deliberately, rather than because the school break happened to land there. That is a more committed booking, but it also means the enquiry will not arrive on its own: you have to prospect for it.
What it does to a client's annual leave — and how to sell that
This is the part worth putting in an email. A client who takes Monday 12 and Friday 16 as leave — two days — gets Saturday 10 through Sunday 18 inclusive. Two days of leave for a nine-day trip is a ratio that essentially nothing else in the April calendar can match, and it is a far stronger opening line than any description of the festival.
It also explains the shape of a festival package. Our Chiang Mai Songkran 2027 programme runs Monday 12 to Friday 16 April, which is precisely the awkward middle — the span a client cannot easily fill themselves and the span on which hotels, vehicles and guides are hardest to secure. The weekend either side is theirs to extend into, and most clients do.
Building a multi-city file around the dates
- Anchor the festival days first — 13 to 15 April are the fixed points; everything else moves around them.
- Put the north in the middle — it is where the festival is strongest and where inventory is tightest.
- Use the trailing weekend for the beach — 16 to 18 April south is a natural second leg and eases the departure crunch.
- Avoid a domestic flight on 12 or 13 April where you can — those are the days the country itself is travelling.
- Keep the arrival a day early — landing on the morning of the first festival day is a bad first impression in traffic.
- Do not build the file around unconfirmed bridge days — treat a Cabinet designation as a bonus, never as a booking assumption.
A file built that way survives whatever the Cabinet decides in the autumn. For the second leg, our Phuket and Krabi guides cover what mid-April looks like in the south, and Chiang Mai covers the anchor.
What to do now, eight months out
Hold rather than wait. The dates that matter are already known, and the inventory that matters — northern accommodation for the nights of 12 to 16 April, vehicles for the festival days, guides for anything guided — is contracted long before the calendar is finalised. There is no version of this window where waiting for the bridge-day announcement improves your position.
What you can reasonably wait on is the client's extension. Whether they add the leading weekend, the trailing weekend or both is a conversation that can happen later without costing anything, because the extension nights are easier to secure than the core ones. Sequence it that way round: core first, extension second, and the file stays flexible where flexibility is cheap.
What the ground partner carries on a moving calendar
The gap between what is announced and what is already sold out. A published holiday calendar tells you when Thailand stops; it does not tell you which northern hotels are already committed, which vehicles are contracted to whom, or which roads will be closed on the afternoon of 13 April. That local read is the substance of Thailand DMC services for travel agents: accommodation held early rather than chased late, transport on our own fleet so capacity does not evaporate in the busiest week of the year, licensed guides contracted in advance, and 24/7 support for a week when ordinary services keep festival hours.
It is also where a Thailand DMC should be candid about what is not yet known. Ask an operator what the bridge days will be and the right answer is that nobody can tell you yet, followed by what to do about it. See how we work with agents in your source market, and the packages shelf for the programmes built on these dates.
Frequently asked questions
What are the official Songkran 2027 dates?
The official public holiday is 13 to 15 April 2027, falling on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The street festival typically runs longer than the official days, particularly in Chiang Mai, so the dates a client experiences and the dates the country formally closes are not the same thing.
Will Monday 12 or Friday 16 April be public holidays?
Not confirmed. Thailand's Cabinet regularly designates bridge or special holidays to connect an awkward block to the nearest weekend, and that decision is usually made much closer to the year. Quote on the assumption that they are working days and treat any designation as upside.
Why does the day of the week matter to an agent?
Because it sets the trip length a client will actually buy. With the holiday marooned midweek, two days of annual leave produce a nine-day window from Saturday 10 to Sunday 18 April. That ratio is the strongest opening line available on a Songkran enquiry, and it is a calendar fact rather than a sales claim.
Which flights tighten first for these dates?
The domestic Bangkok to Chiang Mai leg, ahead of the long-haul sector. Regional and domestic demand concentrates on the eve of the festival as the country itself travels, so an internal leg left until after the international booking is confirmed is often the harder of the two to secure.
Should we wait for the final calendar before booking?
No. The three fixed days are already known and the inventory that decides a Songkran file — northern rooms, vehicles and guides for the nights of 12 to 16 April — is contracted long before any bridge-day announcement. Hold the core, and leave the client's weekend extension as the flexible part.
How do we get a Songkran 2027 file quoted?
Send the dates, pax, the base city and whether the client is extending into either weekend to b2b@explera.co.th. Naming the extension up front means the first quote comes back in the shape the client will actually book.
