Ubon Ratchathani opened a new natural attraction on Friday 18 September 2026: Kaeng I Khiao, a broad rock terrace with a stream running across it, inside the Buntharik–Yot Mon Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a genuine addition to Isan's short list of sellable nature sites — and it sits in a wildlife sanctuary rather than a national park, which is a legal distinction that decides how you can sell it. What opened, and where it is
Protected Areas Regional Office 9 (Ubon Ratchathani) formally opened the site on 18 September 2026. It lies in Kho Laen subdistrict, Buntharik district, Ubon Ratchathani province, within the Buntharik–Yot Mon Wildlife Sanctuary near Thailand's eastern border country.
The feature itself is straightforward and, for this part of the country, unusual: a large natural rock terrace with water flowing across it, running year-round, surrounded by intact forest. The stated purpose of the opening is ecotourism — drawing visitors in a way that puts income into the communities bordering the sanctuary. The regional office has instructed the sanctuary to put safety measures, visitor services, waste management and strict environmental rules in place alongside the opening.
A wildlife sanctuary is not a national park
This is the part that will catch an agent out, so take it before the selling angle. In Thailand, a wildlife sanctuary sits under a different legal regime from a national park. Access is generally more restricted, permitted activities are narrower, and the opening of one site inside a sanctuary does not open the sanctuary. The published announcement covers the opening of Kaeng I Khiao and the management measures around it; it does not set out visiting hours, an access route, a permit process or a group-size limit, and we are not going to supply any of those from inference.

The realistic product is not a standalone trip. Added to that, Kaeng I Khiao gives the itinerary a morning that is neither a temple nor a market — which, on a third day, is the difference between a client who extends and a client who does not. Three rules while the site is new, and they are the same three a Thailand DMC applies to any protected-area site in its first season:
- Do not put it in a brochure yet. A site that opened this month has no track record on access, road condition in rain, or how it handles a coach. Sell it as a confirmed-on-request item until it has a season behind it.
- Treat the green season seriously. A stream across a rock terrace is at its most impressive when water is high and at its least safe at the same moment. Water-level conditions decide whether this is a highlight or a photograph from the car park.

Thailand keeps announcing protected-area sites for community income rather than for visitor volume, and that framing is a useful signal: it tells you the intended scale is small, the management will be conservative, and the commercial upside for the trade sits in the surrounding district — the shops, the homestays, the local operators — rather than in the site itself. That is a good thing to sell honestly and a bad thing to over-programme.
